Singapore Joins Global Campaign One Billion Rising

On February 13, 2013, at 8:00pm, Singapore will join with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING. This is an international event taking place through 13th and 14th February across the world and a group of volunteers from varied backgrounds, but with a common passion are organizing the Singapore chapter.

This event marks a call to show strength in unity, and advocate an end to violence against women and girls by putting our feet together and dancing to the tune of ONE BILLION RISING along with the whole GLOBE. The Event would be graced by some of the eminent personalities who have done exceptional work in related fields.

Aptly, the event is being held on the eve of a day when we profess love to our near and dear ones. This event will thus profess non-violent and caring relationships towards women. The use of dance and music adds a whole new element of marrying culture, tradition and music to bring in change and to vow protection of women who are the basic caregivers and nurturers. This world movement closely blends with the community cultures we promote in Singapore.

“One Billion Rising is an event that brings solidarity for a cause in a whole new way. When we talk of change we talking also of taking steps together. This couldn’t be taken more beautifully than through a celebration of unity through dance to promote a culture of non-violence, respect and gratitude…a call for unity to create waves across borders to bring awareness, compassion and care. A billion people dancing to the tune of their hearts, to protect, prevent and persist…till the violence stops…I am proud to be associated with this movement and I welcome you all to come join the rhythm of change…” Said Sreyashi Sen, the organiser of One Billion Rising Singapore chapter.

The program will be for 90 minutes at Clarke Quay central fountain on 13th of February, from 8pm-930pm.

ABOUT ONE BILLION RISING

ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. On this V-Day, activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men around the world will join ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. ONE BILLION RISING will move the earth, activating women and men to dance across every country.
