BACKGROUND

Malayalees are the second biggest Indian linguistic community of Singapore after the Tamils with an estimated 40,000+ population in Singapore.  Malayalees are an Indian ethnic group who have Malayalam as their mother tongue. We can trace their roots to the coastal south-western state of Kerala in India.

The Singapore Malayalee Association (SMA), established in 1917, is believed to be the oldest registered Indian Organization in Singapore and is the core association for the Malayalees in Singapore.  100th year of its existence, which is a very special and unique landmark year, is being celebrated with a yearlong set of events and activities.  The highlight of the celebrations was a Gala Dinner with PM Lee as the Guest of honour held at the Marina Bay Sands in October 2017. The Thiruvathira dance performance is also part of the extended 100th year celebrations of the Association.
