Suicide is an intricate issue, influenced by a myriad of factors such as psychological conditions, societal pressures, and personal struggles. Risk assessment involves understanding the interactions between risk factors, stressors, triggers, cultural perspectives, individual vulnerabilities, and the availability of means for self-harm. Given this complexity, AI offers a unique advantage. It can analyse vast amounts of data over extended periods, providing insights that might elude human therapists.

Case Study: Arun

Consider Arun, a hypothetical user who has been interacting with a mental health chatbot for half a year. Over this period, AI learns how Arun likes to express himself by engaging in empathic conversations with Arun using Generative AI. Text analytics and natural language processing leveraging AI track subtle changes in Arun’s language, tone, words used and the timing of his messages. AI can detect that Arun’s messages have increasingly included words like “feel like giving up,” “alone,” and “cannot do anymore, “especially during late-night hours. AI can correlate such changes with specific life events Arun would have mentioned, such as a recent episode of family violence.

Imagine if Arun inquired about bidding farewell three months ago and asked for information on grief counselling. These inquiries, when combined with his recent language patterns and life events, create a multi-dimensional picture of Arun’s mental state. By synthesizing this data, the AI program could flag Arun as a high-risk individual for suicide, even before he explicitly states any suicidal thoughts. This pre-emptive identification could be invaluable, especially if it triggers a more immediate human intervention, like activating Arun’s safety net and connecting Arun to a mental health professional or a suicide helpline.

Arguably, AI has a limited understanding of context and underlying emotions can lead to misinterpretations. For example, if Arun were to suddenly start using more positive language, the AI might incorrectly assume that his risk has decreased, not considering that some individuals may express a sense of relief when they decide to take their own lives.

Collaborative Intelligence: A Balanced Approach

The future of AI in suicide prevention is not an either-or scenario between machine and human expertise; it’s a collaborative effort that leverages the strengths of both. This balanced approach can be broken down into four key dimensions:

Ethical Foundation: AI can offer immediate emotional support and basic guidance. However, it must be designed to be free from biases related to race, religion, gender, or socio-economic status. Human oversight is essential for setting and enforcing ethical standards, including data collection, storage, and analysis. Regular audits and reviews should be conducted to ensure that AI is serving the best interests of the users.

24/7 Availability: AI’s round-the-clock availability can be a game-changer, especially for younger people who are more comfortable with digital communication. However, humans bring an irreplaceable depth of emotional understanding that AI currently cannot replicate. In high-risk situations, immediate human intervention is crucial and potentially life-saving.

Data-Driven Personalized Therapy: AI’s ability to analyse data over extended periods can identify long-term trends or changes in behavior that might be missed otherwise. Human experts should have the final say in the design and functioning of the AI algorithms, ensuring they meet medical and ethical standards. The therapist-patient relationship remains vital, offering emotional support, trust, and a human touch that AI cannot provide.
