The Supreme Court upheld BJP MP Navneet Rana’s caste certificate from Amravati on Wednesday, overturning the previous Bombay High Court ruling. The top court ruled that the Bombay High Court should not have interfered with the scrutiny committee’s report on Rana’s caste certificate.
Rana had been accused of using fabricated documents to obtain a scheduled caste certificate to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from the reserved Amravati constituency. The High Court, on June 8, 2021, had invalidated Rana’s ‘mochi’ caste certificate, alleging fraudulent use of fabricated documents. Additionally, a fine of ₹2 lakh was imposed on Rana, with records suggesting she belonged to the ‘Sikh-Chamar’ caste.
